History
Earl R. Skinner began delivering neighbor farmers milk to a local creamery in 1932. This led to transporting their cattle using straight truck to local buyers and later expanded to the Madison and Milwaukee areas. In 1945, Earl purchased two small local trucking companies which gave him Interstate and Intrastate authority and his first semi-tractor (gas) and semi-trailer. Due to the fact that southwestern and central Wisconsin lumber mills had a need to get their lumber to markets, he expanded into the flatbed world. This of course established a need to house and repair equipment. The first terminal was erected in 1948 and added onto in 1958. In 1960, Earl and his two sons William and Richard formed a full service leasing company for private manufacturers to transport their own products to their customers with their own drivers. Earl passed away in 1970, Bill and Dick purchased the company from his estate and formed Skinner Transfer Corporation. At the same time, they purchased a trucking company from Wittenburg, Wis. which greatly expanded the scope of operations. Bill became President and CEO. By this time, the company was very diversified with many kinds of trailers: dry and refrigerated vans, flatbeds, drop decks, grain, semi-dumps, petroleum and pneumatic tankers. In 1978, Bill and Dick built new maintenance shop facilities with wash bays. The corporate office was erected in 1989. During these years the trucking industry was deregulated and we were then able to serve our customers in 48 states. 1990 found us establishing a terminal in New Castle, Indiana to handle additional freight. In 2003, a freight brokerage was started at the corporate terminal. In 1994, Bill Skinner sudden death caused another adjustment. Evelyn Skinner became President, which continues today. Both Bill and Evelyn have received the prestigious Babbitt Award from the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association. It is given for outstanding contributions to the trucking industry and their communities. Evelyn has served as Chairman of the Wisconsin Motor Carrier Association (November 2003-October 2005). At present, Evelyn is Alternate Vice President from Wisconsin to the American Trucking Association. |
